Ballad of Johnny & Ginny

Johnny came looking for a good time, met Ginny behind the bar
He said: “set ‘em up honey I ain’t going nowhere
and I love you just the way you are.”
“Who knows baby later tonight by the time that you get off
if you keep setting ‘em up like that well, we might be in love.”

Ginny said “boy you may be as handsome as they come
but I ain’t falling for no fancy lines ‘cause that has all been done.
I ain’t looking for a man I just need a ticket out.
if you’ve got a set of wheels maybe we can work things out.”

So the two of them drove off into the sunset that same day
Without having a clue of where to go but they went anyway
Ginny’d always talked about leaving town for good
Though we all said that we would too, she knew we never would

Days went rolling by and I guess we were kinda slow
In admitting just the very thing we didn’t want to know
But summer came to pass and Ginny left the very month of May
Now Ginny ain’t tending bar no more, Ginny’s gone away

Then word came down to my hometown about Johnny doing time
And Ginny’s coming back today and we’re back to feeling fine
“Now isn’t that the greatest news”, I heard somebody say
“I never liked the whole idea to begin with anyway.”
Dreams are very nice and all but they’re not what life’s about
When tending bar is all you know there ain’t no ticket out.
